Black History Month: February 2022

The second installment in our winter series of Virtual Radcliffe Book Talks will feature Anita Hill, author of Believing: Our Thirty-Year Journey to End Gender Violence (Viking, 2021). Professor Hill is University Professor of Social Policy, Law, and Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Brandeis University.

Now in its second year, The Boston Globe’s Black History Month Film Festival will honor and celebrate the lives, culture, and creativity of Black Americans through film. Both classic and new works will be made available for virtual viewing throughout the month. Each screening will also be followed by a virtual panel event to provide insight and context for these stories of strength, joy, and love.

From the Boston Public Library: In her latest work about social movements, the legal scholar, social historian, and best-selling author Linda Hirshman chronicles abolition – the social spirit, people, and political alliances that changed American history.

Clint Smith, the award winning author, “leads (us) on an unforgettable journey of monuments and landmarks that offers an intergenerational story of how slavery has been central in shaping our nation’s collective history and memory.”

From Berklee School of Music: Dean of the Professional Performance Division Ron Savage leads an all-star group in an evening of Black American music. Drawing from the African diaspora, this group of world-renowned musicians will touch on jazz, soul, and the spiritual roots Black American music.

Jubilee Juneteenth & The Thirteenth portrays the influential, often overlooked role of Black Americans in the fight to end slavery.

Helping Black entrepreneurs thrive is critical to closing the racial wealth gap. Join us for a conversation on how to eliminate barriers that prevent Black-owned businesses from reaching their full potential. Globe columnist Shirley Leung will moderate the discussion with Visible Hands co-founder Daniel Acheampong, City Sealcoating president Keith Chaney, and BECMA chief executive Nicole Obi.

Against the enduring mystery of Phillis Wheatley’s African origin, this talk will address how the poet established bearings in a world far from her natal landscape.
