LSC: Writing

Strategies and tips for approaching writing.

Local Writing Concerns

Local writing concerns refer to standard and pattern elements of individual sentences or paragraphs, including:

  • Grammar and mechanics, the standard structure of a written language and special text features (i.e. bold, italics),
  • Spelling, the formation of letters and characters into words,
  • Punctuation, the use of sentence indications for pauses, stops, and meaning (i.e. comma, semicolon, period).

Importantly, these local concerns are tied to one's audience, as well as the broader elements of diction, tone, and style:

  • Diction, the selection of words,
  • Tone, the development of voice, mood, feeling, or experience through word choice, punctuation, organization, & form,
  • Style, encompasses diction, tone, as well as grammar and mechanics, spelling, punctuation, and form typically in response to genre conventions.
